What is High Blood Pressure?

What is blood pressure?  Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls.   Blood pressure is written as two numbers sucblood-pressureh as 114/72.  The top is the systolic number and is the pressure when the heart beats.  The bottom is the diastolic number and is the pressure when the heart rests between beats.  Your blood pressure is considered normal if it is below 120/80.  If you’re an adult and your systolic pressure is 120 to 139, or your diastolic pressure is 80 to 89 (or both), you have pre-hypertension or blood pressure that needs to be watched so that it does not go higher.  High blood pressure means the pressure in your arteries is higher than it should be.  The reading would be 140 systolic or higher and/or 90 diastolic or higher.  No one knows exactly what causes most cases of high blood pressure. 
Can high blood pressure be cured?
No, it cannot.  However, it can be managed.  You cannot control these risk factors:
·        Race – black people develop high blood pressure earlier in life and their average blood pressures are higher than the bloods pressures of whites.
·        Heredity – A tendency to have high blood pressure runs in families.
·        Age – In general, the older you get, the greater your chance in developing high blood pressure.
·        Sex – Men tend to develop high blood pressure earlier in life than women
What can untreated high blood pressure lead to?
·        Stroke
·        Heart attack, angina or both
·        Heart failure
·        Kidney failure
·        Peripheral arterial disease
What can I do about my blood pressure?
You can:
·        Lose weight if you’re overweight
·        Eat healthy foods low in saturated fat, trans. Fat, cholesterol and salt
·        Eat a diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products.
·        Increase your daily physical activity
·        Limit alcohol to no more than one drink a day.
·        Don’t smoke
      Take blood pressure medication.

      Our body works well if we treat it well.  Making sure we keep our blood pressure under control could certainly save our us from malfunctions we do not want to face.  We always think bad things only happen to the other person, not to ourselves, for we feel invincible.  Healthy blood pressure is an important ingredient toward a healthy life.
